John Butler Trio - A biography
John Butler Trio Bio
The JOHN BUTLER TRIO emerges from the studio with new album April Uprising.
In June 2009, John Butler proudly announced the new line up of the ever-evolving John Butler Trio. Prominent Melbourne musician Nicky Bomba (drums and percussion) of ‘Bomba’ fame and principal drummer on ‘Sunrise Over Sea’ joined the band and bass player Byron Luiters from Sydney outfit Ray Mann Three completed the new line up. John Butler and his new band mates spent several months bunkered down in their Fremantle studio putting down tracks for their fifth studio album entitled ‘APRIL UPRISING’, which was released in the spring of 2010.
The new album title April Uprising came from an incredible journey John undertook for the ‘Who Do You Think You Are’ Australian TV series. He traces the Butler name through generations of hardship to a matriarch who sang for her survival and follows his Bulgarian ancestry to a forebear caught up in a violent revolt called the April Uprising.
The recording process for the new album (the first release from the JBT in 3 years) has been shared with avid JBT followers via a special studio sessions page on the band’s website: www.johnbutlertrio.com
John Butler Trio continues to tour in support of the recently released album April Uprising. The album has been praised by Rolling Stone for its “Melody, Subtlety, Authenticity, and Sophistication”, while Paste declared it time for Australia’s “gifted gutarist John Butler Trio’s star to ascend in the United States.” April Uprising manages to bring a variety of influences to the table “Straddling blues and bluegrass,” writes Billboard, “the trio delivers an eclectic mix, lending a Southern-rock feel on the track ‘Don't Wanna See Your Face,’ a Celtic flair to its haunting ‘Ragged Mile’ and even featuring steel pans on ‘Take Me.’” Alternately the song “One Way Road” is described as a “tire-swing summer rock cut with a shot of bluegrass and a little bit of California sunshine.” American Songwriter noted that the album showcases “a newfound maturity for an artist that might just be finally finding his stride.”
“Positively gritty and adventurous!” (Austin Chronicle), John Butler Trio certainly are hitting their stride. Upon its release, April Uprising saw the band’s highest Billboard chart debut in its US history. The Australian musician and group are reaching new heights with American audiences, playing to rapturous crowds across the country this summer, including sold out shows at Red Rocks and NYC Summer Stage in Central Park. They also continue to make their mark on the AAA radio charts. Their current single “I’d Do Anything” has just impacted radio to a great response.
